Fear of heights

May 21, 2009

If someone wants to try diving but has a fear of heights, how can they conquer that fear?  Any suggestions?

If someone has a real fear of heights - a phobia type of fear - than I don't think diving is the sport for them. However, if is a general fear of trying, but the height makes them anxious, I think that is very normal. I think many divers when they first start the sport  have some hesitation in regards to the height. It is scary - especiallly 10-meters!

I think the key is to start slow, and start on the 1-meter diving board. Work on the fundamentals of diving, the approach, the back press, and the entry and you will gain confidence. Once the confidence is there, moving up to a new level isn't as scary. However, even the best divers in the world still hold a healthy respect for the 10-meter platform. Thirty  feet is high - fun and excillerating - but high!
