I just got started in diving at my local college and my coach wants me to dive off the side of the pool by arching my back and just jumping really lightly with my heels and keeping my hands above my head. I have never heard of this warm up. I cannot perform it correctly because it feels like I am going to bellyflop or hit the side of the pool. Can someone explain this move or at least tell me what it is called. thanks

Hi Erik,
That is a rather odd warm-up. I have not heard of it before. My only guess is that your coach is asking you to try this because he wants you to jump up when you dive. Were you a former swimmer? I ask this only because as a swimmer, your goal when diving off the blocks is to jump out so you can get the most speed and distance for your race. Diving requires divers to jump up (some distance from the board, but not too much) and dive deep. If you come from a swimming background, you may have a natural habit of diving out and shallow.
My best guess it that your coach is trying to break that habit by having you do the extreme opposite. Regardless, I'm sure your coach knows what he is talking about. He sees your diving and he knows what will help you (individually) improve.
